canine good citizen classes

Canine Good Citizen – CGC – is an AKC (American Kennel Club) title for pet dogs of all breeds including mixed breeds. Yes, your Heinz 57 from the pound could earn an AKC title, just like the dog competitions on Animal Planet! An intermediate class such as this is a great opportunity to challenge you and your dog’s skills and come out shining.

A CGC is like saying your dog has been recognized for having nice manners, especially in public, and knows how to behave accordingly. Think of the halo your dog could be sporting at your next family reunion! Additionally, a Canine Good Citizen title just may well convince a new landlord that you and your dog won’t be a nuisance.

Not only does a CGC title mean your dog is well-mannered, it also means you can most likely pass the Animal Assisted Therapy test, enabling you and your pooch to visit the infirmed and children with special needs. Our intermediate classes consist of teaching you and your dog to have a high level of obedience. We cover heel, distance stays, walking through crowds and being attentive to you in a highly distractive environment such as the presence of wheel chairs, walkers and crutches. All without treats or choke collars.

This pass or fail test will be given on week seven bt a certified CGC evaluator.

Canine Good Citizen Class Requirements

All dogs must be licensed and current on vaccinations.

All dogs must have a basic obedience background. A basic obedience class is the only prerequisite.

• Your dog must have a strong, but not necessarily perfect recall, be able to walk nicely on lead, lay-down and sit as well as a moderate level of self-control. (If your dog has not accomplished any of the basics you should attend and finish the basic group class first, then move on to the CGC class).

• Other issues addressed are weaning your dog off any special equipment such as head halters.

Equipment requirements vary from dog to dog, however no choke, slip, prong/pinch collars or flexi-leads are permitted.

• A martingale or no-slip collar, a head halter or a harness are acceptable pieces of equipment for the first class.

• A 6-foot leash.

• A 20 or 30 foot long line.

This is an advanced class geared to those who have had a basic level of obedience.

• The class involves more teaching distance stays, distance recalls, heel, sitting politely while being petted by strangers, proper greeting of other dogs, and a high level of distractions while your dog exudes self-control.

• During the 6 weeks we will solidify commands taught in the basic class, wean our dogs off head halters and treats. Your dog will learn to work for verbal praise and ear scratches instead!

Please bring all of this and a quality amount of soft, pea-sized treats to the first class. Don’t forget to bring a positive attitude and a hungry dog!
